Can You Freeze Magic Mushrooms?

Home » Blog » Can You Freeze Magic Mushrooms?

Short answer: Yes, you can freeze magic mushrooms, but only if it’s done right.

Done wrong, and you risk ruining your stash with moisture damage, potency loss, or even mold. No one wants that.

Whether you’re buying in bulk or just trying to stretch your supply, freezing dried shrooms is a solid long-term storage solution. But before you toss your mushrooms into the freezer next to the frozen peas, there are a few things you need to know.

What Happens If You Freeze Mushrooms the Wrong Way?

If you freeze mushrooms without prepping them properly, here’s what can go wrong:

  • Moisture seeps in – leads to sogginess or mould
  • Potency drop – exposure to light, air, or moisture can break down psilocybin
  • Unpleasant texture – thawing improperly can make them rubbery and less effective

So while freezing works in theory, it needs the right prep.

How to Freeze Dried Magic Mushrooms (The Right Way)

Here’s a step-by-step to keep your shrooms fresh and effective for months — even over a year.

1. Make Sure They’re Fully Dried

Only freeze completely dried mushrooms. Even a tiny bit of moisture inside the stem can cause freezer burn or mould over time.

Pro tip: Use a food dehydrator or desiccant packs until they snap like a cracker.

2. Use Vacuum Sealed or Airtight Containers

Air = enemy. Moisture = double enemy.

  • Vacuum-sealed bags work best.
  • Airtight mylar bags or mason jars with moisture absorbers are a solid second choice.

3. Avoid Frequent Freezer Trips

Each time you open the container, condensation can sneak in. Portion your stash into smaller sealed bags if you don’t plan to use it all at once.

4. Label Your Stash

Always write down the date you froze it. While frozen shrooms can last a year or more, it’s always best to use the freshest first.

Can You Freeze Fresh (Wet) Mushrooms?

Technically, yes, but we don’t recommend it. Don’t do it.

Freezing fresh, undried mushrooms will damage the cell walls. When they thaw, they’ll turn mushy, lose potency, and may even go bad faster.

If you’ve got fresh shrooms, your best bet is to dry them fully first and then follow the steps above.

What Not to Do

  • Don’t freeze gummies or chocolates (they’ll melt weird)
  • Don’t skip drying
  • Don’t store mushrooms in plastic sandwich bags, they’re not airtight enough
  • Don’t use the fridge for long-term storage (too humid)

So… Should You Freeze Your Shrooms?

If you’re sitting on a bulk order from Electric Avenue or simply want your capsules, dried shrooms, or elixirs to last longer freezing (the right way) can be a smart move.

You’ll get:

  • Longer shelf life
  • Preserved potency
  • Peace of mind knowing your stash is protected
